China began the research and development of scooptram in the 1960s. In April 1961, Zhengzhou Construction Machinery Manufacturing Plant/First Ministry of Engineering Machinery Research Institute and Xiamen Construction Machinery Factory (predecessors of Yutong Heavy Industry, Tianjin Construction Machinery Research Institute and Xiagong Group respectively) established a joint design group, referring to foreign prototypes, Research and development of my country’s first generation self-propelled scraper. The design was completed in August of the same year. On December 22, 1962, China’s first self-propelled scraper prototype C-6106 was born in Zhengzhou Construction Machinery Manufacturing Plant.
The single-machine scraper has both scraping and transportation functions. Especially when the transportation distance is between two to three hundred meters to one to two kilometers, its operating economic efficiency is significantly better than that of other mechanical combinations. In view of this, in the 1960s and 1970s, the research and development of scooptram received the attention of relevant national departments. In August 1963, according to the National Science and Technology Commission’s “1964 New Product Key Control Project” plan, Zhengzhou Construction Machinery Manufacturing Plant and the First Ministry of Construction Machinery Research Institute established a joint design group to develop and design the CL7 self-propelled scraper. The CL7 self-propelled scraper, which was trial-produced in 1972, adopts hydraulic mechanical transmission, and its buckets are also controlled by hydraulic cylinders. Compared with the first generation of self-propelled scooptram, the CL7 self-propelled scraper The product grade of the company has undergone a qualitative change, creating the first new era of my country’s scooptram. The machine represented the latest level of China’s mechanical and electrical products at the time. It was sent to Cologne, Germany to participate in an international exhibition in June 1975; it won the National Science and Technology Conference Award in 1978. In October 1978, in accordance with the requirements of the First Ministry of Machinery, two CL7 self-propelled scooptram carried out the first industrial test of construction machinery on the plateau in the section from Golmud to Xidatan of the proposed Qinghai-Tibet Railway.
Today, decades later, the scraper that originally carried the mission and honor is struggling. Although the scraper has considerable economic efficiency in the operation of scraping and transportation, it is replaced by a combination model of excavator or loader and dump truck. According to statistics, in the United States, the amount of earthwork completed by scooptram accounts for 40% of the total amount of earthwork.
